Saskatchewan election: Swift Current

Everett Hindley of the Saskatchewan Party is elected in Swift Current.

Summary

Swift Current is an urban riding for the city of Swift Current and the surrounding area. It is the riding of former Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall. After his resignation in 2018, a byelection saw Everett Hindley hold the seat for the Saskatchewan Party.

Boundaries

The boundaries of this riding surround the city of Swift Current, which is in the centre. It stretches north on Waker Road and south on 11th Avenue SW, then west past 19th Avenue NW and east on the Trans-Canada Highway 1 and the South Service Road.

Last Election

Wall defeated Saskatchewan NDP candidate Hailey Clark by over 4,800 votes. Turnout was nearly 59 per cent. In the March 2018 byelection, Hindley defeated the NDP’s Stefan Rumpel by over 2,500 votes. Turnout was 42 per cent.

History

Former premier Brad Wall became the MLA for the riding in 1999. From 1991 to 1995, the NDP held the riding, with John Penner representing from 1991 to 1995 and John Wall from 1995 to 1999. Two premiers have been elected from this riding, Wall and Thomas Walter Scott, the first premier of Saskatchewan.

Candidates

NDP: STEFAN RUMPEL

Born and raised in Swift Current.

Teacher at Swift Current Comprehensive High School and was the associate producer of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games.

Manages the Swift Current Improvisational Theatre.

 

Saskatchewan Party: EVERETT HINDLEY Incumbent

Elected in a byelection in 2018.

Grew up on a family farm near Melfort and is the oldest of four children.

Graduated from the Western Academy Broadcasting College in Saskatoon in 1995 and then moved to Swift Current the following year.

Was the morning news announcer and news director for local radio stations for three and a half years and the colour commentator for the Swift Current Broncos hockey broadcasts.

Began working for the newly elected MLA Brad Wall as his constituency assistant in October 1999.

Became the executive assistant to the leader of the official opposition in the spring of 2006 and served as the executive assistant to the premier when the Saskatchewan Party formed government in 2007.
