About 65,000 Calgary residents are now being allowed to return home, after they were evacuated this week due to flooding.
The Bow and Elbow Rivers spilled their banks and flooded several communities in Canada’s fourth largest city and turned the downtown core into a lake.
Nenshi warned that it could be a while yet before the downtown has recovered enough for business to return to normal.
The city and its residents are now trying to assess the damage, pump water out of homes and businesses, and clear away the mud and debris left behind by floodwaters.
While the situation in Calgary begins to improve, further south the powerful South Saskatchewan River is rising in Medicine Hat.
It’s not expected to crest until early Monday morning, but by Sunday morning it was lapping over its banks in low-lying areas and people were busy laying down thousands of sandbags.
Global News‘ team of reporters have been capturing the flood clean-up and flood preparation efforts.
