EDMONTON- A former RCMP officer has been found not criminally responsible for the murder of his wife.
In July 2010, Tirth Sehmbi was arrested and charged with second degree murder for shooting his wife Rajpinder 16 times, inside their southeast Edmonton home. Court heard Sehmbi shot his wife because he believed she was having an affair at the time.
On Friday, Sehmbi was found not criminally responsible for the crime.
A Court of Queen’s Bench Justice made the ruling after conflicting opinions from five mental health professionals- three brought forward by the defence, and two by the Crown.
The judge sided with the defence’s argument that because of mental illness, Sembhi did not fully appreciate what he was doing when he killed his wife.
Sehmbi was remanded into the custody of Alberta Hospital.
