Winnipeg residents will have another option for a daily newspaper, as Metro Canada has announced plans to start Winnipeg and London editions of the popular free daily publication.
Starting Apr. 4, the newspapers will be distributed by promoters, in street boxes and at strategic locations throughout the city, targeting a 18- to 49-year-old demographic of young, active metropolitan residents. Metro is already published in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, reaching an estimated 1.4 million readers daily and 2.9 million readers over the course of a week.
Metro Winnipeg is a joint venture between Metro International S.A. and Torstar Corporation, and Steve Shrout, Publisher of Metro Alberta, has been appointed as Publisher for Metro Winnipeg.
"I am delighted to lead this remarkable opportunity as we partner with the community of Winnipeg,” Shrout said in a recent release, “We look forward to offering a fresh urban news perspective in one of Canada’s most vibrant Prairie communities.”
"It is exciting to see the demand for Metro continue to grow with both readers and advertising partners," said Bill McDonald, President and Publisher, Metro English Canada. "Our goal is to continuously improve and enhance our brand in an effort to reach the important target market of youthful, active metropolitans in every major market across Canada. Metro’s expansion into Winnipeg and London is the natural next step towards achieving this goal."
