A 25-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash that closed a portion of Stoney Trail for several hours.
According to police, the young man was driving along Stoney Trail between Harvest Hills Boulevard and Deerfoot Trail when he lost control and rolled into a ditch.
Investigators said he struck the concrete base of an overhead highway sign before the vehicle — a Ford Focus — finally stopped. The man was the only person in the car.
“Early indications are that excessive speed may have been a factor,” police said in a news release Tuesday evening, adding the investigation was still underway.

“Our crews initially responded to reports of a vehicle that had come into collision with one of the sign standards along eastbound Stoney Trail,” EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux explained.
“The vehicle had been on fire for a brief period after the collision.”

In a 7:38 a.m. tweet, police urged drivers to find alternate routes, saying eastbound Stoney Trail would be closed to all traffic between Harvest Hills Boulevard and Deerfoot Trail N.E.
The eastbound lanes were reopened just before noon.
