Man cuts himself outside ‘Today’ show

TORONTO — A man apparently tried to kill himself during a live broadcast of NBC’s Today show on Thursday.

“There was an incident on the plaza,” host Matt Lauer told viewers shortly after 8:00 a.m. “A man out there attempted to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He did harm himself in some way.”

The apparent suicide attempt was not seen on the broadcast.

According to witnesses, a man believed to be in his 50s pulled out a box cutter and slashed his wrists at about 7:50 a.m. outside the Today studio at Rockefeller Center.

Security guards contained him until police took over the scene. The man was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, according to a report.

No one else was injured in the incident.
