B.C.’s Bible Belt gets first ever pride parade

The first ever gay pride parade in Abbotsford, B.C. kicked off at 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Previous attempts to hold a pride parade in the deeply religious area of the Fraser Valley were met with severe opposition, but this year, the family-friendly event went forward.

Marchers gathered at the Matsqui Recreation Centre at 2:30 p.m. ahead of the 3 p.m. walk to Civic Plaza.

The walk will be followed by a free barbecue, speeches, film screening and panel discussion.
