The attorney general’s office for Quintana Roo state said Sunday that 62-year-old Daniel Lavoie had been killed “with violence.”

The attorney general’s office declined to discuss a possible motive.

In a statement emailed Sunday night to Global News, Global Affairs Canada confirmed a Canadian citizen had been killed in Mexico.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who has been murdered in Cancun, Mexico,” the statement said.

The department is helping the victim’s family but declined to identify the person, citing privacy laws.

“Consular services are being provided to the victim’s family,” the statement continued. “Consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information. Due to the provisions under the Privacy Act, no further information can be disclosed.”

Lavoie’s Facebook page showed he enjoyed nature and photography. A number of people from Cancun commented on his Facebook page expressing sadness at his passing. It’s unclear, however, how these individuals were connected to Lavoie.
