Kingston police arrest teen robbery suspect

Kingston police have arrested a male teen they say stole property from a person and then threatened him with a gun.

On June 22, around 1:30 p.m., Kingston police were called to the library on Gardiners Road near the Cataraqui Centre to respond to a robbery.

Const. Ash Gutheinz, media relations officer with Kingston police, said the suspect stole property from a male outside the library after threatening to harm to him.

Police say the two knew each other and had agreed to meet at the Cataraqui Centre so that the victim could sell the suspect a valuable backpack.

When the two left the mall police say the suspect suddenly threatened to punch the victim in the face if he did not relinquish the backpack.

The teen then allegedly grabbed the backpack from the victim and ran away.

The victim and another witness chased after the teen, who then allegedly reached into his own backpack, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at his pursuers, who both stopped chasing the teen.

Police were able to identify the teen through security footage from the mall, and on June 25, patrol officers saw the teen riding a scooter on Rideau Street and arrested him.

The 13-year-old Kingston youth was charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, using a firearm and fleeing after an indictable offence,and possess weapon for committing an offence.
