Fire hydrant turns into gushing fountain after police incident in Kelowna – Jun 17, 2019

UPDATE:

Kelowna RCMP say a 40-year-old man has been taken into custody and is facing a number of potential criminal charges following a lengthy standoff with police.

The man was not named by the RCMP.

Police added that after unsuccessful attempts to call the man out of the Bryden Road home, members of the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team apprehended the suspect.

Kelowna RCMP say they are continuing their investigation into a string of crimes they believe are connected. Those who witnessed events either in the Arab Road or Bryden Road area and have not spoken to police are asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.

UPDATE 9:25 p.m.: A police standoff on a Kelowna residential street is over.

After two loud bangs, RCMP were seen exiting the area with one man in handcuffs.

Brayden Rd. remains closed and only one police vehicle was seen leaving the area.

RCMP said the entire incident began with a reported stabbing that took place in the 100-block of Arab Rd. on Monday at about 4:15 p.m.

“The stabbing victim has since been taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening in nature,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said.

The suspect allegedly then carjacked a woman’s vehicle to flee the scene.

That victim was also transported to hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening in nature, he said.

The suspect vehicle was spotted by police who attempted to stop it, with public safety in mind, Cpl. O’Donaghey said.

“The suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle after it collided with a fire hydrant on Bryden Rd. near Highway 33,” he said. “Officers chased the suspect on foot, [he] ran into and barricaded himself inside an empty nearby home.”‎

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to come forward.

At around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, there were reports that a vehicle struck a fire hydrant on Bryden Rd.

Water could be seen gushing more than 10 metres into the air beside utility lines, off Highway 33.

The hydrant has since been turned off by City crews.

Numerous police vehicles were parked in the block leading up to the gushing hydrant and RCMP officers could be seen rushing toward a home on Bryden Rd.
