TORONTO — Actor Corey Stoll has signed on to star in The Strain, a pilot shooting in Toronto this summer.
Stoll, currently earning raves for his role on the Netflix series House of Cards, is the first cast member announced for the project, which will be directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth).
Stoll will play Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, leader of a team that investigates biological threats, who discovers a vampiric virus threatening New York City.
“To me, having the right lead for The Strain series was perhaps the most important creative task,” Del Toro told Deadline. “To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track.”
Del Toro filmed the sci-fi epic Pacific Rim in Toronto last year (it’s in theatres in July) and will be back in early 2014 to shoot his next feature, Crimson Peak.
The Strain, an adaptation of del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy, is expected to become a series on U.S. cable channel FX.
