Man faces charges after nearly day-long standoff with Brantford police

Police have arrested a man after a standoff that lasted nearly 20 hours in Brantford’s city centre.

Officers say they were called to a home in the area of Market and Grey streets on Tuesday just before 6 p.m. for a report of a person being threatened by a 36-year-old Brantford resident.

Upon arrival, authorities say the man barricaded himself inside a room.

Police told Global News they set up a containment area and began negotiations with the individual, which continued overnight and into Wednesday afternoon.

Just before 2 p.m., officers say they made contact with the man in his home and arrested him.

The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released, is facing charges of uttering threats and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He has also been taken to hospital to undergo a medical assessment for precautionary reasons.

Police said there was no threat to public safety during the lengthy negotiation process.
