Kelowna company alleges missing funds went to family members of fired employee – Mar 12, 2019

In a civil suit filed in January, a Kelowna company that provides services for disabled youth and adults alleged its former bookkeeper took approximately $1.5 million dollars.

The privately-owned company, Access Resources, has now made an amendment to its claim, alleging the sum is more like $1.8 million, and that large sums of the stolen money went to family members of the bookkeeper.

In its suit, Access Resources claims Carey Earl transferred the money to her and her family’s bank accounts over a 15-year period before she was fired last year.

The suit alleges that she added members of her family to Access Resources’ payroll and attempted to delete the accounts after she was confronted by Access Resources.

Access resources alleges that Carey Earl’s son was paid more than $200,000 over 15 months. The allegation reads:

In the period of April 2017 – September 18, Carey Earl added her son, Rodney Earl, to the payroll of the plaintiffs, indicating that he was employed as “residential manager.” The defendant, Rodney Earl, was never employed by the plaintiff at anytime whatsoever.

Access Resources also claims she gave more than $13,000 to her daughter Alexandra Terry to help pay for her wedding.

And it alleges that Carey Earl used some of the money to buy properties — including where they currently reside in Lake Country, a property in Kamloops and a house where her daughter resides, also in Lake Country.

Access Resources is also claiming that the Earls purchased a number of vehicles with the funds allegedly taken. Access Resources wants to freeze those assets until the suit is settled.

In an affidavit, Access Resources claims Earl admitted to taking the money but maintains it was legitimate in the form of wages, contracts, or other payments.

Global News attempted to speak to the Earls for comment. They could not be reached.

Meanwhile, Access Resources has filed a complaint with the RCMP, but no charges have been laid. Access Resources says the police investigation is just getting underway.

So far, none of the allegations against the accused in the civil claim have been proven in court.
