A sheriff’s office in California released body-camera video on Wednesday showing a deputy firing her gun at a vehicle, after police say the driver inside fired a shot from his own weapon.
According to police, the body-camera footage depicts the attempted murder of deputy Riley Jarecki at about 11 p.m. on Feb. 17.
“The decedent, Javier Hernandez Morales, fired the first shots,” police said in a Facebook post. “Deputy Jarecki returned fire.”
In the video, Jarecki is seen speaking to the suspect first from the passenger side and asking if she can look around in the car to ensure there’s no weapons or suspicious items inside and tells Hernandez Morales not to move. He appears to say “yes” and she walks around the car.

CBS News reports she then taps on the glass and asked Morales to roll the window down several times before he responds and does so.
He then is seen on camera pulling out a gun and police say he then fires at the deputy. She manages to get away and moves back to the passenger side, drawing her gun and firing several times.
“It’s pretty obvious that he intended to kill her,” undersheriff Jon Crawford said. “We are proud of the deputy’s composure and her fight to save her life.”
Authorities say Jarecki was not physically injured and has been placed on administrative leave as an investigation is conducted into the incident.

Hernandez Morales died at the scene of the shooting. According to CBS, he had a significant criminal history with arrests for weapons violations, driving under the influence and assaulting a police officer.
A loaded .22 calibre rifle was found inside Hernandez Morales’ vehicle, which police say was the weapon used and had been stolen from Fremont, Calif.
