‘God’s chauffeur’ is at your service in Barrhead

EDMONTON- Everyone in the Town of Barrhead knows him as ‘God’s chauffeur,’ and that’s exactly what Doug Gibb was hoping for when he started his transportation service.

Gibb loves to drive, and has loved it ever since he sat behind the wheel for the first time in the late 1930s.

“I did the first driving on the farm with an old Overland and then the Model T,” he said. “I just feel at home behind the wheel.”

Now, at 92-years-old, Gibb is using that passion for driving to help others in need.

“A bit of transportation for people who need it. Not the ones that might want it, but we’re after the ones that need it,” Gibb explained. “It’s people that have wheelchairs or walkers.”

Everyday, Gibb loads his fellow community members into his van and takes them to medical appointments, on errands, and pretty much anywhere else they need to go.

“I’m just thrilled that they’re giving me the opportunity.”

The town’s mayor calls Gibb a Godsend.

“When you have a desire to help people like he does, it’s pretty easy to just catch on fire and do more encouraging with him,” said Brian Schulz.

In a small community such as Barrhead, Schulz is grateful to see people looking after one another.

“It’s really encouraging that people are stepping up and helping out in communities, because that’s really what we need in small towns.”

He’s been driving for over 75 years, but Gibb says only God knows how long he’ll continue to do it.

“I know not what the future holds, but I do know who holds the future.”

And while he may be a man of God, Gibb says he’s not sure he lives up to his title as ‘God’s chauffeur.’

“I’m a long way from being God, I’m just one of his sinners,” Gibb said with a laugh.
