Moncton father and son find closure in a guitar pick

Josh Babineau and his 11-year-old son Dawson had what he described as a “spiritual” moment at the Bryan Adams concert in Moncton this week.

“It was definitely her saying goodbye,” said Josh.

The two had gone to the concert in memory of Josh’s mother Vickie Babineau, who passed away suddenly almost three years ago at the age of 57.

“She had a brain aneurysm, bleeding inside the head and we didn’t get to say goodbye so it was pretty tough,” Josh said.

“I was pretty depressed for a long time. But I had Dawson to keep me going.”

“It was pretty hard for me.” said Dawson, who was only seven-years-old when his grandmother passed away.

Josh described his mother as a dedicated single mom and grandmother with an infectious laugh who was a huge fan of Bryan Adams’.

“Summer of 69, Heaven, you name it, she wanted to sing it,” said Josh.

So what better way, he thought, to feel closer to her than to take his son to a concert by her favourite artist.

That is where the heavenly moment happened.

Partway through the concert, Dawson says he decided to run down to the front of the stage to dance in honour of his grandmother, saying he was thinking of her “the whole time.”

He thought of her especially when Adams played one of her favorite songs, Heaven.

“It was breathtaking, bone chilling. I shed a few tears,” said Josh.

While his son was dancing in front of the stage, Dawson says the singer looked down at him and tossed him his guitar pick.  It fell to the ground and Dawson quickly snapped it up.

“As soon as I got it, my heart stopped. Right away, I just thought that my grandmother had something to do with that,” said Dawson.

Their heavy hearts weighed down by loss for years were suddenly full again.

“I cannot even describe it. She was definitely there. There is no way she wasn’t,” said Josh.

Dawson keeps the pick safely zipped in his wallet, now a symbol of undying love and long-awaited closure. He said he may frame it with a pictures of his grandmother and think of her every time he looks at it.

Dawson’s message to Bryan Adams?

“Thanks for throwing me the pick.”

It’s a feeling echoed by his father, who said that pick helped bring them peace.

“It is definitely her saying goodbye,” said Josh.
