Rescue officials have saved four crew members stranded aboard a storm-battered sailboat in high seas off Nova Scotia Monday night.

Capt. Wayne Jarvis, air co-ordinator with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, says the U.K.-registered vessel had been located about 240 nautical miles southeast of Halifax.

A CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron from 14 Wing Greenwood was involved in a successful search and rescue mission of the crew of the British S/V Makena,, which was de-masted and had four people aboard. After the Cormorant refuelled at the Thebaud Processing Facility, which is part of the Sable Offshore Energy Project (SOEP), they extracted the crew approximately 250 nautical miles Southeast of Halifax before returning them to 12 Wing Shearwater, Halifax.

The sailboat had been beaten up in the stormy seas, but a tweet from Joint Task Force Atlantic says that the four crew members were safely hoisted into a helicopter by a search and rescue crew and have now been flown back to Halifax.
