Two men are dead and an RCMP investigation is underway after two cars collided on a highway south of Edmonton late Tuesday afternoon.
Police said officers were called to the scene on Highway 19, near Range Road 261, shortly after 5 p.m. The crash happened at a dip in the road, where it passed over a ravine near the town of Devon.
“Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered that an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu and a westbound Chrysler Neon had collided, head on,” the RCMP said in a news release issued Tuesday night.
Police said both drivers died at the scene. They were both from nearby communities in Leduc County.
One was a 45-year-old man from Thorsby, and the other was a 56-year-old man from New Sarepta. There were no other people in either car.
Highway 19 was shut down for several hours following the collision. Both cars were seriously damaged.
One of the cars seemed to have significant front-end damage and was stuck on top of the metal guardrail. The other heavily damaged car was on the opposite side of the road.
Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
