Officer-involved shooting on Samson Cree Nation under investigation by ASIRT

Two men are recovering from gunshot wounds after a police pursuit and shooting early Monday morning south of Edmonton.

Just after midnight, police on the Samson First Nation in the Maskwacis area were called to a report of a shooting.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said two officers “started a foot patrol in attempt to locate the individuals involved.”

They found two men and “a confrontation occurred that resulted in one officer discharging his carbine rifle in the direction of the individuals.”

A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his leg, ASIRT said.

The second person, a 20-year-old man, ran away but RCMP later found him at a nearby residence, ASIRT said.

He also appeared to have a gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“It is unknown at this time whether the injury was sustained during the confrontation with police or during an earlier shooting on the Samson Cree Nation that could be related to the original calls to police,” ASIRT said.

The agency’s investigation will look into that matter.

A non-police issued long-barrel firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting, ASIRT said.

While ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, police will continue to investigate the events leading up to the incident.
