Homicide investigators have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in a residential Surrey neighbourhood on Thursday.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation team (IHIT) said 30-year-old Surrey resident Sumeet Randhawa was gunned down in the 6700-block of 130th Street just before 2 p.m.
IHIT said Randhawa was known to police, and that the shooting is believed to be targeted.
Residents in the area said the shooting has left them feeling unsettled.
“I came from work and it was all closed; I don’t know just went home, I checked with my son because he is in this elementary school, which was locked out, so he told me little bit and then I just Googled and I knew that one person was shot dead,” said one neighbour.
“There’s an elementary school right over there and lots of kids walk by here and for that to happen, it makes more sense to happen in the middle of the night at 4 a.m. or something, but right in the middle of the day that’s insane, that’s so brazen”, said one man who lives nearby.
Another woman was left in tears, saying “It’s scary. I don’t know how to describe it. My daughter is crying, she made me cry. She lost her teacher a few days back in the accident (a crash at 176th Street and 32nd Avenue), and now this thing happened in the community. It’s shocking.”
Surrey RCMP closed off 130th Street between 64th and 68th Avenue to investigate.
People are being urged to avoid the area.
Meanwhile, mayoral candidates are commenting on the killing ahead of the October 20th civic election.
Both Tom Gill and Doug McCallum issued statements Thursday night.
