UPDATE: Castleridge fire guts two homes, forces evacuation

CALGARY- Firefighters remained at the scene of a major house fire in Castleridge for hours on Tuesday, trying to determine the cause of an early morning fire that destroyed two homes.

The fire broke out in a home on Castlebury Court N.E. just after 1 a.m.

When crews arrived at the scene, one home was fully engulfed and the flames had already spread to a neighbouring home.

Firefighters evacuated a total of 17 people, five from the two homes involved and seven from nearby homes. The displaced residents kept warm in a city transit bus as crews battled the blaze.

Two people, one child and a man in his mid-thirties, were treated on scene by EMS.

“Him and his oldest son are just devastated,” says Jason Major. “They can’t believe everything’s gone.”

Major believes a battery charger started the fire.

He says his brother Will found the charger burning in his eldest son’s bedroom.

“They doused it with water, they put blankets on it tried to smother it and thought they had it out thought they had it out. Before he knew it, when he looked back the light was coming back from Ethan’s room and when he opened the door it was in a blaze.”

Investigators have recovered the charger but it could take weeks, or even months, to determine if it caused the fire.

Fire crews were also dealing with two other fires, one Monday night and the other early Tuesday,

The patio deck of a home located in the 1700 block of 43rd Street N.W. caught fire around 3:15 a.m.
