ST. ANNS, N.S. – Relatives of a missing Nova Scotia man fear he may have driven his car off a ferry and into the fast-flowing waters of a Cape Breton bay.

Linda Halliday of Pictou says she’s worried her 81-year-old father, Jerry Hengeveld, could be the man crews are looking for in St. Anns Bay.

Halliday says her father had been driving around visiting friends, but that she became suspicious when relatives called last Friday to ask if she’d seen him.

The RCMP confirmed that the 81-year-old’s car was spotted at a gas station in nearby Baddeck, N.S., the day of the ferry incident.

Police say a car drove onto the boat on March 25 and off the end of an upright ramp, eventually sinking below the water’s surface.

Crews, who had to suspend their search over the weekend due to weather and ice, are hoping to resume their work today if ice in the bay has moved out.
