‘G.I. Joe’ fights off competition to dominate weekend box office

TORONTO – Audiences hopped into movie theatres over the Easter long weekend, helping G.I. Joe: Retaliation debut with an estimated $41.2 million at the box office.

The sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis.

The animated feature The Croods, featuring the voice of Canada’s Ryan Reynolds, fell from the top spot in its second week, earning $26.5 million to boost its total to $88.6 million.

Tyler Perry’s drama Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor bowed to $22.3 million to take third place at the box office.

Olympus Has Fallen and Oz The Great and Powerful round out the Top 5 list with $14 million and $11.6 million respectively.

The weekend’s other new movie, The Host, debuted in sixth place with $11 million.

The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, opened in limited release and earned an impressive per-theatre average of $67,500 (by comparison, G.I. Joe averaged $11,078 per theatre).
