HALIFAX – Halifax police were searching for a suspect Monday after a young woman awoke to discover a man in her room.

Staff Sgt. Barb Saunders said officers were called to a large apartment building on Barrington Street in the city’s south end Monday morning around 5 a.m.

Saunders said the man entered an apartment where two women were sleeping.

She says the man, who had entered through an unlocked door, departed after a 23-year-old woman woke up and told him to leave.

The woman was not hurt and nothing was stolen from the apartment.

“We’re putting the message out there to ensure everybody is diligent about locking their doors and windows,” said Saunders on Monday.

The suspect is described as a tall, slender man that has a thick accent.

Police have received similar reports from women in the city’s south end over the past several years.

In February, 50-year-old Barry Edward Sinclair was sentenced to five years in prison for breaking into a home and watching a woman sleep.

Saunders said police believe this is an isolated incident and isn’t tied to past cases of men watching women sleep.

“At this time, we have nothing to suggest that this is related to any of the past types of calls coming from the south end,” she said.
