Winnipeg Blue Bombers reserve offensive lineman Qadr Spooner has been suspended for two games by the CFL for violating the league and CFLPA drug policy following a positive test for the banned substance methasterone.

According to Wikipedia, methasterone is a “synthetic and orally active anabolic-androgenic steroid which was never marketed for medical use.”

It is also known as Superdrol and was “brought to the black market as a designer steroid.”

Spooner shared a message on social media saying he did not knowingly take the substance.

Spooner is the second Blue Bomber to run afoul of the CFL and CFLPA drug policy, but has yet to play a CFL game after being selected by Winnipeg in the second round of the 2017 CFL draft.

The McGill product has spent the first eight weeks of this season on the injured list or practice roster.

Blue Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters had this to say in a prepared team statement.

“We were informed recently that Qadr Spooner had tested positive for a banned substance. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fully support the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, and trust Qadr will be more conscious of his decisions moving forward.”

Under the CFL and CFL Players’ Association’s joint drug policy, players who test positive will face a two-game suspension for a first doping violation, a nine-game suspension for a second violation, a one-year suspension for a third and a lifetime ban for a fourth.

A suspended player cannot participate in regular season or post-season games, but can be involved in other team activities at the club’s discretion.
