The Nanaimo Lakes wildfire is now 160 hectares in size and has become a “wildfire of note” in B.C.

Crews continued to work overnight to contain the fire burning in the Nanaimo Lakes area.

Although this fire is 10 per cent contained, it is still considered to be out of control.

The fire is burning away from the evacuation alert area set by officials but unpredictable weather conditions may hamper the efforts of firefighters.

The evacuation order was issued over concern about danger to homes west of the fire — the RCMP asked people to leave the area immediately.

The alert is for 77 residences for an area east of the fire.

If there are questions about this order or alert, people are recommended to call the Emergency Operations Centre phone line at 250-390-6538.

Traffic on Nanaimo River Road and Nanaimo Lakes Road is currently being stopped at South Forks Road in the direction heading to the fire (west). Residents living on Nanaimo River Road with proof of residency are permitted to enter and exit. This fire is not affecting any other roadways.
