ENGLISHTOWN, N.S. – Police have temporarily suspended the search for a car that drove off a ferry in Cape Breton because thick ice has moved into the bay.

Sgt. Al LeBlanc says divers decided not to resume the search today because of safety concerns related to ice that is blocking St. Anns Bay.

LeBlanc says fishermen in the Englishtown area indicate the ice might not clear out for a few days after it moved in overnight.

The crew had hoped to deploy side scan sonar again to probe the fast-flowing waters for a car that plunged off the ferry Monday at around 8:45 p.m.

The vehicle drove onto the ferry Monday evening and off an upright ramp, plunging into the water as the strong current rushed out to sea.

Police say it’s unusual that they still haven’t received a missing person report or heard from anyone who may know who was driving the car.
