Severe thunderstorm watches were issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada Thursday.
The areas include most of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, the Red River Valley, and extending into the Whiteshell.
Wednesday afternoon, southern Manitoba was given a ‘moderate risk’ of severe weather.
Heavy downpours, hail, and funnel clouds are all possible Thursday afternoon and evening.
Unstable conditions across southern Manitoba could lead to thunderstorm activity starting Thursday afternoon and continuing into the evening. Thunderstorm activity is expected to develop along a cold front. Thunderstorm activity will be somewhat scattered along the front but severe weather is possible.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, heavy downpours are possible with 40-50mm of rain potentially falling with thunderstorm activity. There is also a risk of hail (2-3cm) and the possibility of funnel clouds.
If severe thunderstorms do not develop over certain regions, rainfall totals will be much less.
Rainfall models for Winnipeg vary drastically from less than 5mm to just over 50mm.
Scattered showers will likely continue into the overnight hours and may even linger into Friday morning.
