Montreal police resumed the search for a boater who went missing Sunday afternoon in the waters of the Saint Lawrence River in Pointe-aux-Trembles, near the intersection of Notre-Dame Street and 52 Avenue.

A passerby called police around 3:45 p.m.

Witnesses reported seeing the man — who was alone on his boat — dive into the water several times.

“On the last dive, he failed to resurface,” said Montreal police spokesperson Véronique Comtois.

It is believed he was carried away by the current.

Officers, armed with a nautical camera, searched the area Sunday and were assisted by the Montreal fire department, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard.

The search was called off at 6:30 p.m. and resumed Monday, both on the water and along the shores of the river.

Police are also asking members of the public to keep their eyes open.

Comtois said police divers may be called in to assist.

The missing man, thought to be in his 60s, has yet to be identified.
