Severe thunderstorm warnings issued for areas north and northwest of Edmonton on Tuesday afternoon have been dropped.
The warnings were issued by Environment Canada just before 4 p.m.
A line of severe thunderstorms stretched from Camp Nakamun to 10 kilometres northwest of Spruce Grove, the agency said earlier Tuesday. It was moving to the northwest and expected to bring with it very strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.
“These won’t be fast moving storms, so the heavy rain and small hail will stay over areas for a long enough period to cause flooding and water pooling on roadways,” Global Edmonton chief meteorologist Jesse Beyer said.
“Heavy rain and small-sized hail are the main threats to these storms, but lightning and damaging wind is also a concern.”
The warnings were dropped by 5:30 p.m.
Beyer said Edmonton will see showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to high-20s on Wednesday and Thursday, he said.
Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm warnings when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
