Saint John’s mayor and council are calling on the provincial leaders to explain exactly where they stand on issues ahead of the upcoming provincial election.
City staff have issued a provincial election white paper, outlining what Mayor Don Darling describes as “critical issues” that must be addressed.
Darling says it’s time to elect MLAs who are willing to be “champions for the city.”
“It’s spelled out in about a dozen pages, where we are, what our reality is, and a range of solutions for us to improve the lives of citizens of Saint John,” Darling says.

The mayor says voters should strongly consider candidates positions concerning key issues, namely amalgamation. Darling has made repeated pleas for help to the province and nearby municipalities concerning the city’s financial burden.
Mayors from municipalities surrounding Saint John have remained steadfastly against any form of regionalization.
The provincial election is slated for Sept. 24.
