A $14-million plan to replace the Victoria Bridge has been given the go-ahead by London city council.
A last minute attempt by councillors Michael van Holst and Phil Squire to build a cheaper version of the bridge didn’t get much traction.
“I think there are areas that have a greater need than an enhanced design for a bridge,” Squire said.
The bridge will feature an arch design that will be more expensive than a concrete crossing.
“The community came out and said what they wanted to see in terms of infrastructure there,” Coun. Tanya Park said.
“We’re a city of rivers, tracks and bridges, and I think it’s time that we pivot away from bargain basement infrastructure in the city of London.”
City staff recommended the arch bridge as it would require less support underneath its base, reducing the environmental disturbance to the river.
The construction of the new bridge isn’t expected to start for another three years.
