Vehicle drives off ferry deck in Cape Breton, plunges into bay

RCMP in Cape Breton are investigating an accident on Monday that involved a vehicle plunging into a bay northwest of Sydney.

Around 8:45 p.m., a vehicle boarding the Englishtown Ferry drove off the deck and into St. Ann’s Bay.  The vehicle fell into the water about 20 to 30 metres from the shore.  It was last spotted around 200 metres from the ferry.

RCMP say local paramedics and firefighters are helping with the search. No details about the vehicle’s driver have been released and police have not confirmed how many people were inside.

A dive team is on the scene to locate the vehicle in the water and search for occupants

The Englishtown ferry takes passengers across St. Ann’s Bay to Jersey Cove.  According to the Department of Transportation website, the ferry was commissioned in 2008 and can carry 15 full size cars. The Torquil MacLean is a cable ferry and is operated by the province.
