History

One of B.C.’s younger municipalities, the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) came into being in 2009, combining the former Town of Fort Nelson and the Northern Rockies Regional District.

Its incorporation made history as B.C.’s first “regional municipality.”

The boundaries encompass as much as 10 per cent of B.C.’s landmass — 85,148.87 sq. km in total.

But the NRRM’s incorporation wasn’t the first time it made history.

When the Village of Fort Nelson incorporated in 1971, it became B.C.’s first and only “resource municipality.”

Its status as a regional municipality means it holds responsibility for rural public roads, rural policing, and that it collects its own provincial rural property tax — unlike in other communities, where the province collects it.
