Les Knight/ Global NewsA home in the west Edmonton community of The Hamptons appears to have been almost completely destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said firefighters were called to a home in the area of 55 Avenue and 207 Street shortly before 6:30 a.m. after a number of people reported a garage being on fire.
They said a family of five was able to escape the home safely and without any reported injuries. When fire crews arrived moments later to battle the blaze, they could see thick plumes of black smoke.
“You can see the damage to the neighbouring homes and it was quite fortunate actually that we were able to stop it where we did and we’ve contained this to really just one badly damaged home,” District Chief Greg Winter said at the scene.
Winter said an investigation into what sparked the fire is ongoing and did not provide a damage estimate.
