The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Watch ahead of the messy weather expected throughout the watershed this weekend.
The GRCA issued the watch through to Tuesday, April 17, and cites current forecasts of local rainfall totals expected to reach 90 millimeters in some areas along the Grand River.

With this amount of rain, combining with wet or frozen ground, the Conservation Authority says rivers and steams in the watershed could expect elevated flows.

A Freezing Rain warning has been placed throughout much of the area, with Environment Canada projecting ice build-up of 10 to 20 millimeters across the region by Sunday morning, with some areas possibly receiving more than 20 millimeters of freezing rain.

The GRCA adds that areas upstream of major reservoirs, such as Grand Valley and Drayton, along with New Hamburg and Ayr on the Nith river, may be especially prone to flooding.
Conditions will be monitored closely throughout the weekend and updates will be issued as necessary.

Residents are reminded to exercise extreme caution around all water bodies. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery, and when combined with these weather conditions, can pose a serious hazard.
Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses as well.
