Freezing rain and heavy rain is in the forecast for the London area over the weekend, according to a special weather statement issued Thursday by Environment Canada.
The advisory stretches across southern Ontario. The national weather agency says some parts of southern Ontario could experience a potential ice storm.
London and Middlesex County will see rain late Friday night that will turn into freezing rain Saturday morning thanks to a slow-moving low-pressure system. The freezing rain will continue for several hours Saturday, the advisory said. Significant ice amounts are possible.
The freezing rain will continue overnight before changing to rain on Sunday that may be heavy at times. The rain is expected to dissipate on Monday.
“This has the potential to be a significant ice storm for some areas with freezing rain amounts in excess of 20 millimetres possible,” the advisory said. “The freezing rain combined with gusty northeast winds to 60 km/h may result in widespread power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines.”
Environment Canada says flooding may be a threat in certain areas Sunday evening.
