It is known as the most colourful event of the season but so far, it’s a sea of green at the Abbotsford Tulip Festival.
Owner Alexis Warmerdam says the tulips are on their way but bad weather has delayed them from blooming.
“Since we announced our opening dates about three weeks ago we’ve had two days of hail, we’ve had two days of snow, and we’ve had very cold, cold days,” she told Global News.
“There’s a lot of tulips that are ready to bloom, they just need a little bit more sunshine and a little bit more warm weather to bloom.”
Warmerdam says to keep an eye on the festival website and Facebook page for details.
Warmerdam’s family has been in the tulip farming business for years.
“My family has been growing tulips in the Fraser Valley for several decades now and there’s always lots of people who would come to our other field to enjoy them,” she said.
“I thought why not plant my own 10 acres of tulips and put it in a place that is a little more accessible to the public and that we could invite a larger group of people to enjoy the same things that we get to enjoy each spring.”
Throughout the festival, which runs as long as the blooms last, about 2.5 million tulips bloom at various stages. An average of 90,000 people visit the festival each year.
