Woman charged with arson after fire in Leduc hospital washroom

Four days after a fire broke out in an emergency room washroom at the Leduc Community Hospital, a 45-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the incident.

On Monday evening, the RCMP said Nadine Breau has been charged with arson, two counts of mischief causing property damage, possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

Police and firefighters were called to the hospital shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday for reports of a suspicious fire breaking out in the emergency room washroom. The RCMP said a female suspect “was identified as being seen in the emergency ward at the hospital then later bringing material into the washroom.”

According to police, the fire was quickly contained and nobody was injured.

Breau was arrested near the hospital a short time after the fire was discovered.

She remains in custody and her first court date is scheduled for April 5.
