Queen’s University handed out its post-season athletic hardware at the 82nd annual Colour Awards banquet in Kingston on Wednesday night.

Claire Sumner of the women’s cross country team won the PHE ’55 Alumnae award as the female athlete of the year.

“It’s quite an honour and a pleasure to be a part of the Queen’s cross-country team for the past four years,” said the life science student from Calgary.

Sumner was a four-time U-Sports All-Canadian and in 2017 won the gold medal at the national championships in Victoria, BC.

“I owe everything to my coaches and my teammates who supported me along the way. They made it a fun team to be a part of, making all my dreams come true.”

For the first time since 1992-93, the Jack Jenkins Trophy for the top male senior athlete saw a tie. Spencer Abraham and Kainoa Lloyd were announced as this year’s recipients.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Abraham was the team captain this past season with the hockey Gaels and led his club to a record 19 wins in the Ontario University Association. He was an All-Canadian and represented U-Sport in an all-star competition against the Canadian National Junior Team for three straight years. He also suited up for Canada at the World University games in Kazakhstan and skated away with a bronze medal for his country.

“It’s pretty surreal,” said the law student from Campbellville, Ont.

“It’s been a heck of a ride, and I take a lot of pride in representing Queen’s and wearing that C on my jersey. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Lloyd was a dominant force on the Queen’s rugby team for five years.

He led the Gaels to an undefeated season in 2017, capturing the Ontario championship. Lloyd was named the man of the match in the Turner Cup final. He scored three tries as the Gaels clobbered the Guelph Gryphons 62-17.

“It’s been an honour to play for Queen’s and win this award,” said the three-time OUA all-star from Mississauga, Ont.

“It was an awesome experience playing for the rugby squad. I’m super proud of the team and super proud of myself for getting here.”

Lloyd will continue to play the game he loves. He currently competes with the Canadian senior men’s rugby program as they prepare for World Cup qualifying matches.
