Heavy flood damage in the South Okanagan

Washout near Heritage Hills subdivision . Shelby Thom/Global Okanagan

The South Okanagan has been hit hard by Thursday night’s downpour.

The Regional District of South Okanagan said it’s dealing with rock falls, flooding and minor landslides.

Landslides were reported in Naramata, Eastside Road, Toy Creek outside of Kaleden, and parts of the KVR.

One home in the Naramata area had to be evacuated.

Officials said they were ready for the flooding.

“We’ve been looking at the flood mapping for weeks now and this is the first big call for incidents. At the RDOS we have a level-one emergency centre,” said Brandy Maslowski, RDOS fire services supervisor.

A subdivision between OK Falls and Penticton is without water after part of Sunnybrook Road washed out.

“We’re dealing with a lot of excess runoff and washed out road. And in that road we had a Fortis gas line, Shaw cable line and our two waterlines. One of the waterlines was compromised,” John Aantjes, owner of Lakeshore Waterworks, said.

He said he hopes to have the water flowing again by late Friday afternoon.

“We’ve diverted the water away that caused the washout as a result of a culvert above that was overwhelmed by this excess runoff. Now we’re working on fixing the pipe and we hope to be running by four today.”
