Brandonite signs first NHL contract with Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights have added some more Manitoba content.

The Knights announced the signing of free agent defenceman Zach Whitecloud of Brandon on Thursday.

Whitecloud, 21, signed a three year entry level contract. He is expected to join the team on the road on Friday. Whitecloud recently completely his sophomore season with Bemidji State University where he recorded four goals and 14 assists in 36 games.

Whitecloud played two plus seasons for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Virden Oil Capitals. He was the league’s top scoring defenceman in 2015-2016 where he had six goals and 34 assists. He also played one game for the Portage Terriers in 2012-2013 after playing in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League for both the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Central Plains Capitals.

The Golden Knights’ roster already included Winnipeggers Cody Eakin and Ryan Reaves while Manitoban’s Cody Glass, Reid Duke and Keegan Kolesar are also prospects in their organization.
