Murder trial underway for Kelowna man accused in fatal stabbing

The jury in a Kelowna murder trial has heard the Crown’s theory of what happened when a man was stabbed to death two years ago.

The second degree murder trial of Chad Colton Alphonse started on Tuesday.

He’s accused in the March 2016 death of Waylon Percy Junior Jackson.

Both men were 26-years-old at the time.

Jackson bled to death inside his Rutland neighbourhood townhouse after a knife was plunged into his heart.

According to the Crown counsel, Alphonse was arguing with his spouse after a day of drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana at the townhouse where preparations were underway for a baby shower the next day.

Jackson intervened to stop the argument and the two men got into a physical fight with Jackson getting the upper hand.

The prosecutor told the jury in his opening statement that “Mr. Jackson hit Mr. Alphonse on the head with a chair a number of times. That Mr. Jackson then dropped the chair and turned his back on Mr. Alphonse. That Mr. Alphonse then inflicted a number of wounds to Mr. Jackson with the red and blue folding knife.”

Alphonse was arrested shortly afterwards and not far away, walking with no shoes or jacket on, but allegedly with the murder weapon.

DNA testing later determined blood on the blade and handle of the knife was that of Waylon Jackson.

The trial is expected to last at least three weeks with the Crown calling about two dozen witnesses to try to prove its case.
