A student at a Saanichton high school has been arrested following a social media post that made reference to a school shooting.

The post showed a youth firing a weapon into a bank of snow along with the caption “practicing for school,” according to Central Saanich Police (CSPS).

A student at Stelly’s Secondary School was arrested on Monday and released on a promise to appear along with several conditions.

Police are recommending charges that include uttering threats and mischief.

“The CSPS thoroughly investigates all reports of threats to our schools and our community,” youth resource officer Michelle Joyce said. “We also encourage parents to speak with their children about appropriate use of social media.”

In a letter to parents written Tuesday, Stelly’s Secondary principal Sally Hansen said:

“It is unfortunate that when a tragedy, such as the one in Parkland, Florida which recently occurred, is seen by one or two individuals as an opportunity to exercise poor judgment in another setting.”

In another recent letter to parents, Hansen said there had been some “concerning graffiti in the school.”
