Winnipeggers take chilly plunge for a good cause

Dozens of Winnipeggers made a splash Saturday for a good cause at the 6th annual Winnipeg Polar Plunge, an event organized by the Winnipeg Police Service that raises awareness and funds in support of Special Olympics Manitoba.

“We’ve done these in -30 [weather] and now we’re in much more friendly temperatures today, which is much more friendly for the participants,” said Darren Anderson, partnerships manager with Special Olympics Manitoba.

This year’s presenting sponsor was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Mascots Buzz and Boomer were there cheering on all who took the plunge, including Coach Mike O’Shea.

“This year [is] a big year for us. We have 103 coaches and athletes going to national games in Nova Scotia and also in PEI and this will help us with training, travel as well as keeping our team happy and healthy on the road,” Anderson said.

About 45 people braved the cold waters on Saturday. Last year, the event raised over $25,000.
