Saskatchewan Party MLA Kevin Doherty is resigning his seat to pursue “an opportunity in the private sector”.

Doherty is the MLA for Regina Northeast and was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 2011. He was re-elected in 2016.

Doherty held a variety of cabinet positions over the course of his political career, including minister of finance. He delivered two provincial budgets, including last year’s fiscal plan which was met with heavy criticism.

Doherty moved to Advanced Education before resigning from cabinet in October 2017.

According to a government release, a byelection will be called for Regina Northeast within six months.
