Sicamous RCMP investigate after flagger struck in head by beer can

Sicamous RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance to identify a suspect who chucked a full can of beer at a flag person on the Trans-Canada highway Monday morning.

RCMP said in a news release that shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 26., a flagger was assaulted by an unknown suspect who threw a beer at the flagger’s head.

The incident took place while the flagger was setting up a cautionary sign on highway 1 west of Sicamous.

The can of beer knocked the hard hat and glasses off of the victim. The protective equipment prevented the victim from suffering a serious injury.

The suspect vehicle is described as a small black car without a front license plate. The make and model of the vehicle is unknown.

“This incident illustrates the danger that highway flaggers face in their duties,” said the RCMP’s news release. “The flagger could have easily been seriously injured by the dangerous and senseless actions of the person responsible for this assault.”

“This is beyond just the usual dangers that they face and the safety issues.. This is certainly just a matter of either somebody’s blatant disrespect for an individual trying to do work. We certainly would like to identify this driver – was it an error, or was it a matter of simply littering?,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk to Global News.
