“Our sincerest condolences and thoughts are with the boy’s family, as well as his friends and classmates,” said borough mayor François William Croteau.
“Today, the entire borough is in mourning and has been shaken by this human drama.”
One lifeguard and a gym teacher were supervising the swimming class of 2o to 30 students, said Alain Perron, a spokesperson for the Montreal school board.
The results of the coroner’s report are expected to be released in March and an investigation is underway to determine what happened.
Montreal police previously stated there was no criminal investigation.
