A flood warning has been issued for the entire Grand River watershed and as many roads in the Waterloo Region and Wellington County are being closed because of ponding.
The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) said on Tuesday afternoon the combination of warm temperatures and rainfall triggered significant runoff into the river system.
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning after the area received up to 30 millimetres of rain between Monday and Tuesday with an additional 25 millimetres expected into Wednesday.
“We’re certainly continuing to monitor areas like Cambridge, Brantford and Cayuga but we’re also keeping an eye on areas like New Hamburg and Ayr as well,” said GRCA spokesperson Cam Linwood.
“Those areas typically experience spring flooding, but they haven’t seen flooding like this in a few years.”
Road closures are being reported in Woolwich, Wilmot, North Dumfries, Brantford, Cayuga and Centre Wellington.
In Cambridge, Blackbridge Road is closed at the Speed River while in Guelph, York Road is closed between Watson and Jones Baseline.
Officials are asking the public to use extreme caution around all bodies of water. The GRCA said the banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and when combined with the current weather conditions, pose a serious hazard.
