Coldest Family Day in Calgary in 24 years

Calgarians are likely planning indoor activities for Family Day 2018. The temperature is expected to remain well below average with a daytime high closer to the average overnight low.

The month of February has been very cold so far this year, with only three days above 0 C. Normally daytime highs will sit between -1 C and 0 C for the month.

Historically Calgarians have enjoyed mild Family Day weather since the inception of the holiday in 1990. Twenty-one of 29 years have brought highs above 0 C with eight of those days above 5 C.

The warmest Family Day in Calgary was in 1995, when the temperature hit a record high for the day of 17.6 C. The coldest Family Day occurred just one year earlier in 1994, when the high topped off at  -19.7 C.

This year will end up being the second or third coldest Family Day in Calgary, depending on the official high temperature.

This is mixed in with an unusually snowy February that has brought over 42 centimetres of snow as of Feb. 18. According to Environment Canada Calgary will normally receive 14.5 centimetres of snow during this month.

Despite nearly tripling the monthly snowfall accumulation already, Calgary has not broken any one-day snowfall records in February, however it has snowed 16 of 19 days so far.
